Telefonica O  in collaboration with RES Ltd win The Pioneering Renewable Energy Project Award 2009.

Project Description

This is Ireland’s first radio base station to fully generate its own electricity. The tower is powered entirely by a small wind turbine and solar panels with battery storage. O2 alone have over 2000 such base stations, so the replication potential of this project is very strong. O2 have reduced their carbon footprint by 44 tonnes of CO2 per annum with this site alone

Judges Comments

‘Innovative renewable energy efficiency project with high replication potential. The project demonstrates a self sustainable mobile communication station powered by a hybrid small scale wind generator and a solar PV system with a battery storage replacing a standard diesel generator’

Mark Lowen, RES Ltd MD commented:

"We are delighted to have been given the opportunity by O2 to design and build this solution. The project which was designed  mid 2008 and commissioned in December 2008 has been a great success and has worked seamlessly since its installation. O2 demonstrated great commitment throughout the project and should be given great credit for their desire to implement a solution that can make a significant difference to the telecoms industry nationally and internationally.
